The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist is one of the biggest films from last summer and the top draw for horror in 2016. It did so well at the box office that once again, The Conjuring franchise will be producing a spinoff for the film titled The Nun.
“Vintage horror fiction!”
But besides the affiliation that James Wan gave it with Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 2, it really does have a real life folklore attached to its mystical powers and there are some reported facts about the demon Valak that horror fans might find intriguing.
In goetic grimoires, The Lesser Key of Solomon, Valak is a boy demon with angel wings that rides a two-headed dragon. Although there is not much to go off of, it is certainly not the demon nun as portrayed in The Conjuring 2. But the two do share the similarities in name as well as the title, “Marquis of Snakes.”
Goetic demons have been featured quite extensively in popular culture, although in most portrayals they have been drastically altered. Their folklore derives from 17th century compilations such as The Lesser Keys of Solomon, Agares, and Andromalius, which is featured in Dungeons and Dragons.

But more to the point, Valak is the demon who has the power to reveal the location of hidden treasures as well as the ability to allow humans to see other demons and creatures, which he will do without harming the human.
As for Valak as he (she) is portrayed in The Conjuring 2, the demon nun is never truly summoned by the Hodgson family, unless you take into consideration the homemade Quija board that Janet Hodgson used when she missed her father.
“Atmospheric and Creepy”
But you should also consider that in The Conjuring 2, the demon nun Valak was also oppressing a restless spirit that resided in the home as well, using it as a conduit to ultimately get inside Janet Hodgson.
